World Insight: “Profound regret” over US withdrawal from UNESCO

US President Donald Trump appears to have delivered on a campaign promise to disengage from the United Nations, after the UN’s world heritage body UNESCO was notified that the US is withdrawing its membership, citing “mounting arrears” and “continuing anti-Israel bias.” The US did say it would “remain engaged … as a non-member observer state in order to contribute US views, perspectives and expertise,” a state department statement added.

In a statement, UNESCO director-general Irina Bokova expressed her “profound regret” over the US decision. What does the withdrawal mean for the UN and US leadership?
